Description

Pietra dura or pietre dure (see below), called parchin kari in South Asia, is a term for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly polished colored stones to create images. It is considered a decorative art. On the lower walls of the tomb in Taj Mahal are white marble dados sculpted with realistic bas relief depictions of flowers and vines. The inlay stones are of yellow marble, jasper and jade, polished and levelled to the surface of the walls.
