Although nowadays is a rarity, a time sundials tracked on the external walls of buildings facing south were common, as they are visible from a distance and cheaper to build. The dial can simply be painted on the wall or formed on a slab of marble or stone. The gnomon can be a pen of iron or brass, or a tripod of metal for extra strength.
