Doi Suthep or The temple of the Holy Relic of Doi Suthep #58559565
Description
A unmistaken symbol of Chiang Mai and the most revered place of worship for the city, where deep respect is constantly paid by residents and visitors alike. Each day, devout Buddhists flock to pay their homage to the shrine, more specifically the holy relice housed in the glittering golden pagoda. The holy relic was obtained from Sukhothai. It was divided into two portions, to be enshrined on Doi Suthep and at Wat Suan Dok. The hill had been regarded a holy place for more than 1,200 years , since the time of the Lua, the original inhabitants who held on to the belief that the souls of their deceased ancestors resided on top of the hill. When Buddhism was embraced, the hill took a whole new meaning, as the epicenter of the universe and the center of Buddhism in Lanna.
