Description

Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia. Located on the banks of the Mekong Rouge once was known as the “Pearl of Asia”. To day city still has many traces of bloody Khmer Rouge rouge regime. There is no public light on the streets, except few main where are government buildings. Its people is extremly poor, no jobs for people. nThe city fell to the Khmer Rouge on April 17, 1975. All of its residents, including those who were wealthy and educated, were evacuated from the city and forced to do labour on rural farms as new people. Traces of this tragedy can be seen even today as city did not recover it self. The Khmer Rouge were driven out of Phnom Penh by the Vietnamese army in 1979 and people began to return to the city. Most of the reconstrucion was made with foreign help. But after some years some of international organizations left Cambodia and reconstruction slowed down. Today Phnom Penh population is about 1.3 milion and many of them live in poor condition. Phnom Penh is not tourist destination. Most of the visitors to famous Angkor Wat complex arrive there from Bankog or from Ho Chi Minh city. Phnom Penh with its empty dark streets in the evenings cant attract great number of visitors. CAPTION - Entering Phnom Penh. Cambodian roads are far away from perfect.
