Golden Gate Bridge Closure January 2015 #64945135
Description
San Franciscoââ¬â¢s Golden Gate Bridge closed down for the weekend of January 10, 2015 for the bridgeââ¬â¢s longest shutdown ever and its first closure in more than 25 years. The bridge closed so workers could install a moveable median barrier installed with the zipper truck, to prevent head-on collisions. Since 1970, there have been 128 head-on collisions that have resulted in 16 deaths, the Associated Press reports. The project budget is estimated at $30.3 million The bridge closed briefly in 1987 to celebrate its 50th anniversary, but the 52-hour closure this weekend will be the longest in the bridgeââ¬â¢s history. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the one-mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The Golden gate opened in 1937 connecting San Francisco, Marin County, California.
