Golden Gate Bridge Closure January 2015 #64945194
Description

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge closed down for the weekend of January 10, 2015 for the bridge’s longest shutdown ever and its first closure in more than 25 years. The bridge closed so workers could install a moveable median barrier installed with the zipper truck, to prevent head-on collisions. Since 1970, there have been 128 head-on collisions that have resulted in 16 deaths, the Associated Press reports. The project budget is estimated at $30.3 million The bridge closed briefly in 1987 to celebrate its 50th anniversary, but the 52-hour closure this weekend will be the longest in the bridge’s history. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the one-mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The Golden gate opened in 1937 connecting San Francisco, Marin County, California.
