Use of catapulte near Château des Baux, France #69012457
Description

The Château des Baux is a fortified castle built during the 10th century, located in Les Baux-de-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône. Visitors to the Château des Baux can see full-scale replicas of huge siege engines like this catapulte or baliste. This large-scale medieval engine could fire large rocks, Greek fire, or carrion up to 250 metres. It was also used as an anti-personnel weapon, because it could be used to stop sorties by the defenders. An engine like this was used during the siege against Robert de Duras in 1355.
