St. George monastery in the Russian town of Meshchovsk Kaluga region. St. George Meshchovsk monastery ââ¬â monastery in the Kaluga diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, located in the village of Iskra Meshchovsk district of the Kaluga region. The monastery was founded in the late 15th century, 30 km from Meshchovsk on the banks of the river Ressy. In the early 17th century, during the Troubles, the monastery was completely destroyed, and revived at a new location near the city Masonskom. During the years of Soviet power most part of the territory of St. George's monastery came to desolation, on the site of the monastery necropolis was established petrol station. In the spring of 2001 was the beginning of the revival of the monastery. Currently built and consecrated a wooden Church in honor of the recently canonized Saint St. George (Lavrov), restored the five-domed Cathedral of Peter and Paul, built the community building and the refectory, is the restoration of the Church of St. George, formed a monastic community. The monastery is very famous in Russia due to its rich history and large number of famous historical personalities, whose life is closely connected with the monastery and the town of Meshchovsk.
