He was a reporter for the top-rated CBS television newsmagazine, 60 Minutes, for 46 years and gained prominence in the 1960s for his stellar reporting of the Vietnam War. He won 12 Emmys, a Peabody Award, an Overseas Press Award, and numerous others. Known as an art afficianado, he died at 84 in his Manhattan apartment from pneumonia, 8 days after announcing his retirement from 60 Minutes.
