Forbidden City (Gugong) was the imperial palace of the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. The palace is situated just north of Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, China. 24 emperors have ruled China from the Forbidden City since its inauguration in 1421 until the Qing Dynasty was overthrown in 1911. The Forbidden City is the world's largest palace today. Palace claimed to have 9999 ý rooms, but the actual number is slightly lower. Today, the Forbidden City, one of China's and the world's most visited tourist destinations and houses including the Palace Museum. Since 1987, the Forbidden City, listed by UNESCO as World Heritage.
