Trachemys. Red freshwater turtle (lat. Trachemys scripta elegans) is a subspecies of pond slider turtles from the family of freshwater turtles (Emydidae). The natural habitat of the subspecies is the South-Eastern part of the United States, but it is massively distributed in other places, where it is an invasive species — for example, in California, where it displaces native species of turtles, it being a popular pet (North and South America, Central Europe, South-East Asia).
