Mounted on his tusker elephant the Front Runner (Peramununerala) carries a casket containing the religious activities of the Sacred Tooth Relic procession. These documents are written on paper made from talipot leaves and must be carried in both hands at all times during the procession. The Esala Perahera is held to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha which is enshrined within the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and is considered one of the most colourful processions in the world.
