Description
Thammattam Players (left) and Davul Players (right) perform through the streets of Kandy during the Esala Perahera in Sri Lanka. The Thammattam drum is tied around the performers waist to allow free movement of the hands and feet whilst dancing and drumming. The Davul drummers move in circles from time to time according to the beat and rhythm of the drum and are considered an essential ingredient of the perahera. The Esala Perahera is held to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha which is enshrined within the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and is considered one of the most colourful processions in the world.
