The Saviour Church on Nereditsa #77708722
Description

The history of the church dates back to 1198 when it was built by Novgorod prince Yaroslav Vladimirovich after the death of his children. The prince's structure was not at all different from the modest boyar churches, merchants' or parish churches of the end of the 12th century. This is a rather small single-domed cubic church. World War II turned the monument into ruins. The measurements taken before the war made it possible to restore the church. Novgorod restorers plan to return the first fresco composition in a unique temple of the Transfiguration of Our Savior on Nereditsa almost destroyed during the World War II. According to specialists, many fragments of monumental painting have been lost irretrievably. In the post-war period of the wreckage of murals behind the walls of the temple was demolished by tourists as souvenirs, and now in most countries around the world. There are examples of the return of such fragments. In particular, several «gift» of fragments restorers returned the first descendant of Russian emigrants, a Belgian professor, Jean Blanco.
