Ancient leather tannery in the city of Fez, Tanning is the process of treating skins and hides of animals to produce leather, which is more durable and less susceptible to decomposition. Coloring may occur during tanning. A tannery is the place where the skins are processed. Besides being famous for having the oldest university in the world, the University of Al-Karaouine, Fes el Bali square, with an estimated population around 300000 is also believed to be the biggest car-free urban area in the world. UNESCO listed Fes el Bali as a world heritage site in 1981 under the name Medina of Fez.
