Sri Mariamman Temple - Singapore #84304330
Description
Located in Chinatown, the Sri Mariamman Temple dates back to 1827 and is the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore. The temple was known as Mariamman Kovil or Kling Street Temple, and built by immigrants from the Nagapatnam and Cuddalore districts of South India. It is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, known for her power to cure illnesses and diseases. Now a national monument, much of the present structure is believed to have been built in 1862-63 by Indian craftsmen. The temple has ornate and elaborate detailing. The `gopuram` grand tower entrance especially is a landmark to generations of Hindu worshippers and Singaporeans alike.
