The Salton Sea fills the deepest part of the basin that used to hold Lake Cahuilla. The lake dried up completely about 400 years ago, only to be refilled by accident when the Colorado River was inadvertently diverted into the basin. Now runoff from agriculture keeps its level more or less stable.
