Sion skyline, Switzerland #8648979
Description
Sion (in french of Sitten in German) is the capital city of the canton of Valais, Switzerland. The city developed at the foot of two hills, each of which is crowned by a medieval castle. Chateau de Tourbillon stands on the tallest of the two hills (left) and is a great medieval fortress sourounded by crenellated walls and square towers. The castle itself is currently in ruins due to a 1788 fire. On the right side lies Chateau de Valere, which in fact is a fortified church, Notre-Dame-de-Valere. It stands on the site of an ancient roman building. A few other similar hills span the valley of the Rhone in the vicinity of Sion, and most of them are crowned by ancient castles and ruins. This HDR image was taken from another hill - Mont D'Orge, crowned itself by the ruins of the Chateau Montorge.
