He is generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, and he was a dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death. Karajan was born in Salzburg, Austria. He was a child prodigy at the piano. In 1933 Karajan made his conducting debut at the Salzburg Festival
