`Assembly` by the sculptor Peter Burke, consists of 16 cast iron figures, slightly larger than life, which occupy a central position in the Berkeley Group`s huge Woolwich Arsenal Riverside development, beside the Woolwich Arsenal Pier, from where Thames Clipper boat services run to Canary Wharf and other locations in central London. Born in London in 1944, Peter Burke completed a student apprenticeship with Rolls Royce Aero Engines in 1960 after leaving school. He then went on to study sculpture at University West of England, Bristol, Fine Art Faculty, graduating in 1972. Working in steel and iron, using industrial processes, Burke’s engineering background has strongly informed his working practice. His work often reflects mankind’s relationship with mass–production and standardization through a rhythm and repetition of materials.
