Upside down Medusa column base, Basilica Cistern #89286101
Description
An upside down Medusa supports a column in the northwest corner of the cistern. Medusa was one of three sisters whose hair was made of venomous snakes, as well as a horrifying visage that turned those who beheld them to stone. The power of their gaze was believed to be negated if they were upside down or sideways.
