Tulips are spring blooming perennials that grow from bulbs. Depending on the species tulip plants can be from 4 to 28 inches tall. Plants tend to have two to six leaves, some species up to twelve. Most tulips produce only one flower per stem. Tulips come in a wide variety of colors. The cup or star shaped tulip has three petals and three sepals. They are often marked on the interior base with dark colorings. There are 75 different species and they are a part of the lily family. They thrive in climates with long cool springs and dry summers.
