Thorney runk of the Pink Floss-Silk Tree #92736801
Description

Image shows the trunk of the Pink Floss-Silk Tree. Of the two species in cultivation, the showiest and most commonly grown is pink floss-silk tree, Ceiba speciosa, formerly Chorisia speciosa. This striking tree is an attention-getter at all seasons because of its thick, heavy trunk, studded with large gray thorns. The natural habitat of the silk floss tree is the north-east of Argentina, east of Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil. The sharp conical prickles deter wild animals from climbing the trees. In younger trees, the trunk is green due to its high chlorophyll content, which makes it capable of performing photosynthesis when leaves are absent; with age it turns to gray.
