The Town of Machico stands on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and spreads up into the mountains. From the 15th century it was known for the cultivation of Sugar Cane. It has an impressive Town Hall and a lovely Church in the shade of trees around a square with coffee shops and cafes. There are two forts in the town and a market takes place regularly. It is close to Funchal the capital of the island
