Chateau d'Avenches overlooking the Roman Amphitheatre in Avenches, a historic town in the french speaking part of Switzerland. The castle dates back to the 13th century, with the beginning of the city reconstruction during medieval time. Avenches (under the name of Aventicum) used to be the roman capital of the Helvetia province, ocupying more or less the current teritory of Switzerland, but later fell into ruin. The Roman Amphiteatre at the base of the castle, is still used to host concerts and it is home to a major opera festival in the summer months.
