The Arches of Queen Victoria Building #99033031
Description
TheÃÂ Queen Victoria BuildingÃÂ (orÃÂ QVB), is a late nineteenth-century building designed by the architectÃÂ George McRaeÃÂ in theÃÂ central business districtÃÂ of Sydney, Australia. TheÃÂ Romanesque RevivalÃÂ building was constructed between 1893 and 1898 and is 30 metres (98ÃÂ ft) wide by 190 metres (620ÃÂ ft) long. The building fills a city block bounded byÃÂ George,ÃÂ Market,ÃÂ YorkÃÂ and Druitt Streets. The use ofÃÂ columns,ÃÂ arches, and a prodigal amount of detail such as was used by McRae in the chosen design are typical ofÃÂ Richardsonian Romanesque, an eclectic style identifiably established between 1877 and 1886. Stained-glassÃÂ windows, including a cartwheel window depicting theÃÂ armsÃÂ of the City of Sydney, allow light into the central area, and the roof itself incorporates archedÃÂ skylightsrunning lengthways north and south from the central dome. TheÃÂ colonnades, arches,ÃÂ balustradesÃÂ andÃÂ cupolasÃÂ are of typically intricateÃÂ Victorian style.
