Description
The Forte da Luz was part of the medieval defensive structures built by Kings D. Manuel I and D. João III 16th century against the incursions of the British and French corsairs on the Portuguese west coast. It had a polygonal shape, with bastions at the vertices crowned by circular hangars, and it was armed with cannons on the embankment, on the side of the sea. Of earth, protecting the monumental gate, it had a triangular revelim. The ensemble was formed by the so-called `Baluarte Redondo`, the `Watchtower` and the chapel of Santa Bárbara.
