Rutgers Celebrates 150 Years of Football #157426196
Description
Rutgers linebacker CJ Onyechi 26 and defensive back Jarret Paul 25 celebrate an apparent defensive stop which was later nullified by a penalty. At the time, Rutgers was trailing in the 1st quarter visiting UMass 14-7 and the deficit ballooned to 21-7 in a season-opening August, 30, 2019 football game at the SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. By the second quarter the Scarlet Knights' defense stiffened, and the offense exploded. Rutgers rallied big-time and went on to score 41 unanswered points, celebrating in style the 150th anniversary of of intercollegiate football by trouncing the Massachusetts Minutemen 48-21 in an NCAA Division 1 FBS matchup. The game had a historic context because 150 years earlier, Rutgers beat Princeton 6-4 in the first inter-collegiate football game which was played in neighboring New Brunswick, NJ in 1869. To the present day, Rutgers is known as the `Birthplace of College Football.`
