The San Francisco Chronicle/Ritz Carlton Building, 4. #230371360
Description
When this historic building first opened in 1889, it was the first skyscraper on the whole West Coast. The de Young brothers paper was competing with Hearst`s Examiner and Spreckles`s Call newspapers in every way and every thing possible. The building structure did survive the 1906 earthquake and fire, but the elevator shafts did intensify the fire on the upper floors, and much rebuilding was required to the interior. When The Chronicle relocated in 1924 and the building was sold, the new owners did another, major renovation, which altered the whole character of the building. Popular at the time. In 1962, the Ritz Carlton bought the building and restored it as much as possible to its original glory. As seen in September 2021.
