Kaliningrad. Kant Island Kneiphof. Immanuel Kant `s Grave #235010879
Description
Immanuel Kant was buried in the `professorial tomb` of the Cathedral in 1804 and became the last person buried there. In 1880, a neo-Gothic chapel was erected over Kant`s grave, which by the end of the First World War 1918 was in a very deplorable condition. By the 200th anniversary of Kant 1924, a new structure was erected on the site of the old chapel, designed by Friedrich Lars, in the form of an open pillared hall and strikingly different in architectural design from the Cathedral itself. Inside the hall there is a stone coffin, which is a cenotaph, there are no remains of Kant in it, they rest deeper. Kant`s grave was restored in 1996, among the first works to restore the Cathedral.
