Limestone statue base with Latin dedication on display at the Archaeological Site of Volubilis in Morocco. #247591188
Description
Pictured is a limestone statue base with a Latin dedication to M. Pompeius Antonianus by his brother L. Pompeius Manlianus on display at the Archaeological Site of Volubilis in Morocco. It was found in 1888 or 1889 by La Martiniere at the Gordian Palace. Manlianus evidently suffered some disgrace at a later period as his name was hammered on this and other inscriptions at Volubilis. The Roman period was from the 1st century AD to 285 when Volubilis was conquered by local tribes. Today the partially excavated site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed for being an exceptionally well preserved example of a large Roman colonial town on the fringes of the Empire.
