Two famed social and political activists and kindred spirits, Elizabeth Holtzman of Brooklyn, NY, and Shulamit Alonii of Israel express solidarity and mutual admiration at The First International Jewish Feminist Conference in Jerusalem on December 1, 1988. Both were indefatigable and sometimes controversial advocates for women’s rights, human rights, and separation of religion and state. Aloni urged from the 1970s for dialogue between he Israeli government and Palestinians in the occupied territories. A longtime Member of the Knesset Parliament, she was founder of the Ratz Citizens’ Rights Party, leader of the Meretz Party and Minister of Education and later, Minister of Communications and Science and Culture. She died on January 24, 2014 at the age of 85. Holtzman was at the time the youngest woman elected to Congress, in 1972, at 31. She was a prominent member of the Watergate Committee in the House of Representatives which investigated then President Richard Nixon. She was also the first Brooklyn Borough President, District Attorney, and New York City Comptroller. At the age of 81 she came out of political retirement and ran unsuccessfully as a Congressional candidate for a seat in Brooklyn in the Democratic Party primary of August, 2022.
