Description
Pictured is a bronze bust of William Letchworth `Uncle Billy` Hurst at Heritage Village Historic Plaza in Grapevine, Texas. The sculptor is Larry D. Crowder. Hurst was born in 1833 and died at age 89 in 1922. He was the father of 14 children and had over 100 grand-children. The City of Hurst began as a rail stop and depot for the Rock Island Rail Line which the company named for him after he granted a right-of-way across his farm for its construction. Inside the masonry pedestal of the statue is the City of Hurst Time Capsule which was placed in 2002 for the 50th anniversary of Hurst as an incorporated city. The capsule will be opened in 2052 at the centennial.
