Underground Railroad Mural, Sodus Point, Wayne County, New York State #267093030
Description
This large outdoor mural on the exterior of the Sodus Point Firehouse commemorates the role of a schooner named `Free Trader` captained by George Garluck to pick up escaping slaves fleeing to Canada. He would stop to pick them up from the waters of Lake Ontario where they had rowed to escape in small rowboats and carry them to freedom in Canada. The mural, by Luis Zarate, also shows images of Harriet Tubman famed for her role in organizing the African American Underground Railroad and leading abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
