Description
Fyvush Finkel shares the stage with the late legendary opera tenor Robert Merrill on May 12, 1997, in Manhattan's Bryant Park during Jewish Heritage Week festivities. Finkel was an American stage, film, and Emmy Award-winning television actor. Brooklyn-born, he starred on the Yiddish theater stage where he performed for 35 years. He was also a stand-up comic in the Catskills on the so-called Borscht Belt circuit. He is perhaps best known for his tv role of eccentric defense lawyer Douglas Wambaugh a role for which he won his Emmy in 1994 in the critically acclaimed drama Picket Fences. He also gained popularity for his role as the curmudgeonly history teacher Harvey Lipschultz in the drama Boston Public. He appeared in the original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof in 1964. Brooklyn-born, Finkel died at 93 on August 14, 2016. Merrill passed in October, 2004 at the age of 87.
