USA, AZ/Phoenix: Frank Lloyd Wright Church and Bell Tower #29960860
Description
The First Christian Church in Central Phoenix, Arizona/USA (on Seventh Avenue) was built (1973) after Frank Lloyd Wrights death following his plans to the letter. The Church Architects Guild of America has called this church one of the 10 best church buildings ever built in America. The four-sided spire and the roof windows (stained-glass) that cap the worship center are designed to provide the worship room with a colorful ceiling light. The four-sided spire appears to be triangular, triangles being Wrights favorite shape. The free-standing (four-sided), 120-foot bell tower offers the same optical illusion as the roof spire. The tower, capped with a 22-foot-tall cross, has no inward supporting structure; steel detailer Frank Grossman created an alloy skeleton that supports the towers 304 tons of concrete, stone, and steel, materials specified in Wrights notes on the original design. ( More images of this church - from different perspectives - are in my portfolio.
