View over the town from tower at ruined Middleham Castle in North Yorkshire. The castle was owned by King Richard 3rd and preferred by him over other castles he possessed. Occupying an elevated position from which potential attack could easily be foreseen, the castle was difficult to overcome and became more of a palace than a fortress over the years.
