Mayor Jane Byrne, Cook County State`s Attorney Richard M. Daley, and Congressman Harold Washington participate in the Democratic Party Primary Mayoral Debate in Chicago in February, 1983. Byrne, the city`s first female mayor was ousted by Washington. Daley became mayor himself in 1989 and was in office for a record 6 terms, spanning 22 years. Washington became Chicago`s first African-American mayor campaigns for the Democratic primary in his successful bid for a second term in office; January, 1987. Washington died from a heart attack suffered in his office, the day before Thanksgiving, November 25, 1987. He was 65.
