Description
Then Speaker of the Israeli Knesset Shlomo Hillel, gestures and shares a laugh with then Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir and Prime Minister Shimon Peres at the Mimouna Festival celebrating the culture of North African Jewry, at Sacher Park in Jerusalem, Israel, on April 10, 1986. Peres was a Nobel laureate and served as president as well. Hillel, a recipient of the Israel Prize, played a significant role in the mass exodus of Jews to Israel from his native Iraq and began the process which brought virtually the entire Ethiopian Jewish population to Israel. All 3 political figures enjoyed exceptional longevity. Shamir died in 2012 at the ate of 96; Peres died at 93 in 2016, and Hillel died on February 8, 2021 at 97.
