Description
Israeli President Chaim Herzog and wife Aura Herzog, center, welcome newly-arrived immigrant, Ida Nudel, to the President`s residence, Beit Hanassi, in Jerusalem; October, 1987. They are joined by Nudel`s sister, Ilana Fridman, and brother-in-law, Lev Arie Fridman, who left the Soviet Union in 1971. A large-scale Western diplomatic effort bore fruit as Russia`s moderate leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, proved far more amenable than his predecessors on the issues of letting Russian Jews emigrate to Israel. This began a surge in Russian Jews emigrating to Israel over the ensuing few years which approached one million people. Herzog, a general, lawyer, Member of Knesset, and a 10-year President, died in 1999 at the age of 78, and Aura Herzog died on Jan. 10, 2022 at 97. Nudel, a global symbol of resistance and the struggle for freedom and a Zionist icon, died on September 14, 2021, at the age of 90.
