William Alexander Leidesdorff was born to a Dutch father, in 1810 in the Dutch West Indies, but because his mother was a small part African, this was to have an impact on his later life.Leidesdorff was one of the first people to come to what was to become San Francisco, while it was still Mexico. He was also the first biracial in America. He made his home at what today is 345 Montgomery Street, and became very successful and wealthy.When Leidesdorff was just about to marry, and he told his bride to be about his mother, being mulatto, her family suddenly broke off the wedding, and he never married.
